Transitions

…so many of us experience. Yesterday morning I had a lovely moment with the Freedom Rangers as they waited for me to open the fence into their last spot on pasture, under the trees (key during these hot days) north of the big barn.   I thanked them for their good work on our pastures and for all the nutritious meals they will provide to our community. As Penelope wrote, “There’s something about them and the life they lived that translates from the…

Bring on the Fall Colors

…lth too.                           Speaking of color! The flock of Freedom Rangers has been dazzling to watch.                       Their charisma was shown as they charged up and down the hill pasture when new paddocks were open to them. And who knows if it was the rock dust and micronutrient amendments to the pasture or the Green Mountain Organic’s feed or just all of this summer’s wonderful sunshine but these were the shiniest feathered birds…

Greens and Valore Galore

…lets moved on to good homes at Knoll Farm and Three Springs Farm. Over 100 Freedom Rangers, known as the Alps, arrived at the Post Office this week, giving you the potential to visit three groups chicks when you come to the farmstand. Tomatoes were pruned. Tons of compost was moved and thousands of starts were planted out. Two farmers even removed years worth of dust from our bikes and road around Berlin Pond. Neighbors and community members ate b…

Kickstarting Compost

…n two directions. Inside the walk-in fridge long rubber gloves eased plump Freedom Rangers and schmaltzy stewing hens from the ice water chill to be dried off and bagged. These chickens were beautiful on pasture. And they are about to be delicious components of cozy meals and tasty sandwiches. Enjoy! We will – already the crock pot did the night shift stewing a hen for today’s farmer lunch. Outside cleanup buzzed along to the tune of the hand-held…

Predators Strike!

…nksgiving destinations from Vermont!   Next we put the remaining 120 or so Freedom Rangers into the neighboring paddock, just a dayahead of our plans to gather them in for processing. As Tuesday’s chicken processing team hit stride we were glad to be getting the birds in the freezer. We’ve heard of counting chickens before they hatch, now we are wary of counting birds before they are bagged. On that note, we were excited to have Michael Mitchell o…

Chicken(s)

…efore but I had never known happy chickens. Later, I marveled aloud at the birds as we weighed, packaged, and labeled them. They look so good! They don’t look exactly like the ones we may be used to from the store, especially the Freedom Rangers with their smaller breasts and impressive overall musculature, but they look good. There’s something about them and the life they lived that translates from the field to the plate and I’m thankful for that…

Summer Grazing

…t, waiting for the sun to dip behind the hill before stacking hay. For the Freedom Rangers, our meat birds, it means some early morning grazing, before the sun is high in the sky and brutal. Click for Video This morning as we went to move them forward, a group of birds were busy grazing on some comfrey leaves and flowers. Just a little reminder of the diversity they get as we move them on pasture. Extra good news, these birds are growing well and…
